The Merton School Improvement team wanted to support their schools in improving attainment by helping them understand exactly which pupils were falling behind.
SIMS Discover was introduced and schools are already seeing the benefits of monitoring attendance as well as assessment. Staff now have the ability to identify which pupils have below a certain percentage attendance, for example, so they know immediately who they need to target. If a child leaves the target group, they know the support put in place has worked.
Similar patterns can be examined with achievement too, so that those FSM or EAL pupils performing below target can be brought to the attention of teachers and strategies implemented to boost their progress.
The hard work put in by the local authority team and the schools was rewarded when they discovered that overall, Merton’s schools achieved higher than national average in both attainment and progress at Key Stage One and Key Stage Two this year.
