Following a successful pilot of award-winning analysis tool, SIMS Discover, Penn Wood Primary and Nursery School decided to bring in a SIMS consultant to help make best use of the software.
Headteacher Jane Girle explains: “Quick and easy analysis of our data by all teachers is essential, and our consultant shows us how SIMS Discover can help – every time she visits we learn something important. We can cross reference pupil absence with attainment data to see if there is a link and probe further the reasons this may have occurred. SIMS Discover shows this in a visual way and staff can instantly see where there are issues.”
SIMS Discover has illustrated the difference in progress for pupils assessed at Key Stage 1 at other schools, showing their APS scores are lower in KS2 than those who have been at Penn Wood for all their schooling. Jane comments: “We suspected this, but have never been able to show it at individual pupil level so visually before which also helps with providing proof for Ofsted.“
When Penn Wood was inspected in March 2012, the school particularly valued using Discover to show the inspectors what they required. Ofsted recognised the impact of effective data analysis, noting, “A rigorous tracking system and effective data analysis aids leaders in closely monitoring pupils’ progress to ensure increasingly careful targeting of support to address any slowing down in pupil achievement.”
Jane adds: “Using SIMS Discover has made it easier to engage with governors - we can show high level anonymous analyses and the impact of subsequent actions, particularly important when planning the allocation of resources against priorities.”
