From crisis to clarity: Tackling behaviour in today's classrooms

By Louise Pink, former headteacher and Account Manager at ParentPay Group

Behaviour in schools has become one of the most pressing challenges in the post-COVID era. With suspensions and exclusions rising sharply, teachers are facing more complex behavioural issues than ever before.

But what if the key to managing behaviour isn't just more rules - but better insight?

Why does behaviour feel harder now?

Recent data shows a 40% rise in suspensions and a 34% increase in permanent exclusions. Teachers report more aggression, anxiety, and SEND-related behaviours. These aren't isolated incidents; they're signs of deeper, systemic issues.

The power of smart systems

Management Information Systems (MIS) are changing the way we work. They help staff log incidents quickly, track patterns, and link behaviour to attendance, safeguarding, and SEND data. This means schools can move from reactive responses to proactive support.

Instead of vague concerns like "Josh is acting out," staff can say, "Josh has had four incidents in maths, all during the last lesson of the day." That level of clarity leads to earlier intervention and fairer outcomes.

Empathy meets structure

Effective behaviour management isn't just about discipline - it's about understanding. Behaviour often signals unmet needs. Schools are now blending consistency with empathy: creating safe spaces, adjusting routines, and training staff to interpret behaviour as communication.

Parents are part of the solution

Timely and transparent communication with families creates trust and a shared sense of responsibility. Today's systems allow schools to share updates - both positive and negative - so parents stay informed and engaged.

What's at stake?

Behaviour affects learning and wellbeing. When schools understand the story behind the behaviour, they're better equipped to support every child - and every teacher.

Takeaway: Behaviour management isn't just about reacting - it's about connecting the dots. With the right tools and mindset, schools can turn disruption into opportunity.
